What does PHP stand for?

PHP stands for Hypertext Preprocessor.

It’s a server-side scripting language used for web development and can be embedded into HTML

Originally, PHP stood for “Personal Home Page”, as it was initially developed to create dynamic web pages for Rasmus Lerdorf’s personal website in 1994, a Danish-Canadian programmer.

Originally, it was a set of Common Gateway Interface (CGI) scripts used to track visitors to his personal website.

Later, he released the source code and PHP evolved into server-side scripting language.

The first version of PHP was released in 1995, and it quickly gained popularity among web developers.

PHP is amongst the top 10 programming languages according to the TIOBE index.
